Child Safety, and Setting Good Examples.

I was having lunch with a friend at Humeriye yesterday, (great little cafe close to the fish market in Kadiköy, btw. They have a huge porch with lots of tables right out front, and the people watching doesn’t get much better.) when two women came in with a really adorable toddler- all huge eyes and curls and dimples. He was super well-behaved, too, and it was nice to watch him run around and try to eat inappropriate things.

But then I looked over and he was in his mama’s lap, cheerfully chewing on her pack of marlboros while the women cooed over him. He threw the pack on the floor and then reached for her lighter and started chewing on that.

The women thought it was hilarious.
